Publishing Placement #2

The day of the meeting.

Choosing what to wear, I felt as though I was getting ready for a trial or attending a job interview for a firm I was inadequately qualified for. I arrived ten minutes before the meeting time (because I have a flawed fear of arriving anywhere late so I have to be ridiculously early for everything – and I was getting cold sat in my car).

I was shown to a waiting area consisting of two couches and an abundance of books. Books on book shelves littering the walls, books pilled on window ledges reflecting the light upon bright urban covers and books neatly arranged over a coffee table that was set symmetrically placed between the couches; drawing my eye to photographs of castles, lakes, bottles of gin and country walks. I sat nervously with notebook in hand, overthinking whether I would look more sophisticated if I sat cross legged or not.

When the managing director, Anna, came out in a beautiful flowery dress with her hair tied in a messy bun holding up her spectacles upon her head, I felt a little more at ease. She sat with a smile and I just hoped she didn’t notice how nervous I was. She was lovely, and spoke honestly at how they only had a small office with limited computers and already had commitments with students from a neighbouring university already in place. She also explained how she was impressed at my office background, eagerness to learn and the enthusiasm I had shown in my initial email to her. For this reason, she wanted to try and squeeze me in.

Finding times when there was a free computer was going to be tricky, but as long as I was happy to work around her schedule, then she was happy to help. I was so grateful for the opportunity and chance she was taking on me.
