Publishing Placement #1

Starting the second year of my degree came with many questions. I wondered what I could learn this year that would enhance what I had already learnt in the last. I also thought about what opportunities awaited the central year of my time here at Edge Hill. I found that for one of our modules, we were to take part in a placement setting relating to literary industries. I was excited at the prospect of gaining not only knowledge this academic year, but some experience too. I jumped at the chance and instantly set out searching for publishing houses local to my area that may be willing to take on a volunteer apprentice for a short time.

Honestly, I sent out a few enquiring emails to some publishing houses that I thought I could travel to. I figured that the more companies I contacted – the higher the chance of a reply… but I had my fingers crossed to hear back from one in particular. This publisher is also located in Lancashire and specialises in non-fictional works including academic texts for a local University. That was where my hopes lied.

After a few days waiting to hear, the ding of my email account told me I had a reply. The managing director had responded with a lovely email explaining that she had several commitments with placements and volunteers already and that she did not think that she had the space for me, however, she was keen to meet with me. My email had caught her attention and despite the lack of space in the office, my story made for a compelling read. She set up a meeting for me to come in and discus the options with her and for her to get a feel for me.

I nervously awaited this meeting…
